General Accountant Reports to: Accounting Manager Job Summary: This position performs accounting work of moderate difficulty in a centralized accounting department of a municipal utility providing electric, water, wastewater, and broadband services to about 35,000 customers. Essential Duties Prepare journal entries, reconcile general ledger accounts, prepare financial statements and operational analyses on various business segments. Prepare lead schedules and assemble documentation for annual financial audits. Analyze intercompany accounts/transactions and prepare related adjusting/clearing entries. Participate in the annual operational and capital budgeting process, including: preparing related documents and statements; providing managers with information to assist in the budgeting process; and, assisting in the preparation of the final documents for presentation to the Board of Directors. Prepare annual Bond Continuing Disclosure statements. Prepare and respond to a variety of utility industry surveys. Analyze and reconcile construction, maintenance and related expenditure data from the utility enterprise asset management system. Maintain the fixed asset subsidiary ledger, including additions, transfers and retirements. Provide leadership and backup for Accounts Payable and Payroll staff. Perform other related tasks as needed. Essential Qualifications Bachelors degree in Accounting, or equivalent education and experience. At least five years experience in accounting. Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and financial applications. Ability to understand and assume responsibility for the preparation and presentation of financial statements and annual budgets. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with various levels of utility personnel. Strong analytical skills. Preferred Qualifications At least ten years of accounting experience. Working knowledge of government accounting principles. Experience with Multiview, UKG, and/or Northstar. Experience with electric or water utility billing and customer information systems. Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents 5, Applied Math 5, Graphic Literacy 5). Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Normal office environment with minimum discomfort due to noise, dirt and dust. Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to working on multiple projects requiring attention to detail.
