ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
USF's Office of Administrative Services (OAS) is made up of the dedicated people who keep our campus, the equivalent of a medium-sized city, moving forward. This team delivers essential services across USF's multiple campuses and locations that together total 11 sites, 1,646 acres, 350 buildings, and 12.8 million gross square feet. With responsibilities that include land use and planning, construction and development, maintenance and utilities, custodial and grounds services, parking and the Bull Runner bus system, environmental health and safety, university police, and emergency management; the OAS team has a wide-reaching impact that touches nearly every aspect of the University of South Florida community in support of the university's mission and strategic plan. On USF's Tampa campus, the OAS team performs a broad scope of services that includes processing and completing over 45,000 work orders annually, providing custodial and maintenance services for 83 buildings totaling 4.5 million square feet, managing over 350 construction and renovation projects each year, providing utilities services for 350 buildings totaling 12.8 million square feet, maintaining 20,500 parking spaces across 93 surface lots and 4 garages, operation and maintenance of a fleet of 26 buses, and performing grounds care of 500 acres of space.

The Fire Safety Section (FSS) within USF's Environmental Health and Safety Department safeguards lives and property by maintaining and inspecting fire safety systems (alarms, sprinklers, extinguishers) to NFPA and Florida Fire Prevention Code standards. FSS also inspects and maintains emergency egress lighting and exit signs.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Position assists the Fire Safety Manager in the management of fire prevention, fire code compliance, as well as the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of fire extinguishers, exit lighting, and emergency lighting in order to protect students, employees and visitors from the dangers of fire while at University facilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Escorts the State Fire Marshal during the building inspection program at USF.
a) Assists with scheduled/unscheduled fire and life safety inspections of all USF buildings.
b) Assists in tracking, reporting, and the timely development/implementation of required corrective actions for code violations.
c) Assists in determining methods/procedures for controlling/eliminating fire and life safety hazards.
Takes the lead on EH&S fire/life safety pre-inspection program to reduce the number of fire code violations cited by the State Fire Marshal.
a) Gets ahead of the State Fire Marshal's inspection schedule.
b) Remedies violations prior to State Fire Marshal's annual inspection.
Supports fire safety system operations.
a) Assists with maintenance, testing, inspection, repair, and calibration of campus fire & life safety systems including but not limited to, fire alarms, fire sprinklers, smoke evacuation systems, fire/smoke dampers, fire doors, and emergency lights & egress signs.
b) Participates in the On-Call Fire Alarm Technician rotation.
Assists in overseeing the testing, maintenance, and repair of fire extinguishers.
a) Develops and maintains inspection, testing, and maintenance schedules for fire extinguishers.
b) Maintains adequately trained staffing to complete inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair work.
c) Schedules other vendors, as necessary, to complete inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair work.
Supervision and Training
a) Supervises the Fire Extinguisher Technician and OPS/FWS student worker(s).
b) Schedules and monitors technician's day to day work.
c) Dispatches technicians to reported problems.
d) Provides opportunities for additional training for technicians.
e) Approves overtime, timesheets, on-call sheets, etc.
f) Assists in the management of fire safety training programs for University students, faculty, and staff.
g) Assists in scheduling in-person and special event training sessions as requested/desired.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and 2-4 years of experience -or- an equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED:
Certified Fire Inspector I (or higher), working knowledge of NFPA and Florida Fire Prevention Codes, knowledge of fire extinguisher use and maintenance, ability to conduct/assist with training, appropriate people skills to put people at ease while undergoing inspections.
SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING:
Experience complying with and implementing provisions of the Florida Fire Prevention Code, Florida Building Code, National Fire Protection Association standards and University policies related to fire/life safety, building codes, personnel management/development, and the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire safety systems including, but not limited to, fire extinguishers, exit lighting, emergency lighting, and experience working with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
